Loading... How can I make an original graphic in Photoshop or GIMP?
If I wanted to show how an engine worked (or something), how would I create a picture of an engine and its pistons in Photoshop? How would I add color to the image to make it both eye-catching and helpful to readers (to differentiate part)?

If you wanted to do a drawing or illustration I would recommend using a drawing software like Illustrator first to draw the object and then photoshop to convert formats and place final touches etc. The drawing tools in other programs are superior to PS however,
you can also use stock images or your own photographs and blend them and do photomanipulation - this is more complicated, but you can use the pen tool to circle and text tool to label an image in Photoshop.
A third idea is to draw out your picture or illustration on paper - and then do a scan and have a digital copy you can manipulate with graphics software.

When ever I need to create a technical/step-by-step illustration, I actually use MS Paint. It's incredibly basic, but the 8-bit art style is surprisingly simple to follow. But, if your set on using Photoshop, I like to use a combination of the pen tool and the shapes tools to create original graphics. In fact, if you get a picture of an engine that depicts the part you want to discuss, you can use the pen tool to trace the part that's in the picture and create an original shape from it. I did the same thing when I needed a logo-style graphic for a dragon.

Sometimes I just get tired of fooling around with the computer and go old school - draw what I want and then scan it in.
