How to Configure Technorati for HubPages

82

By melbel

Technorati is not only a great place for HubPages users to get backlinks, but is also fantastic for traffic as a large number of people read Technorati.

The big problem with Technorati is that it can be a huge pain to set up, especially for HubPages users. Technically, Technorati is for blogs and hubs aren't really blogs. However, there is a way to get Technorati working for your hubs so you can get those nice juicy backlinks and that Technorati traffic!

Luckily, HubPages is super awesome, so they've provided each user with their very own RSS feed URL! This means that even though hubs are more closely related to articles than they are to blogs, that technically speaking, your HubPages account is a blog! Huh? Don't worry about the technical speak. Just know that since HubPages gives you an RSS feed, your hubs are technically blog posts (even we're cool here and write articles, not stuff saying what we had for breakfast!)

So enough babble! How do you get your Technorati account to be friends with your HubPages account? Here's how:

Signing Up

You've got to sign up to Technorati! Don't worry, it's just a standard sign-up form. Head on over to Technorati.com to get started.

Adding Your HubPages Info to Technorati

Sign in to Technorati. Once you're logged in, click your username in the right-hand corner.

You will be taken to a page where you can fill out your profile details. Go ahead and fill this stuff out later (after you're done with this tutorial.)

At the bottom of this page, under the section where you add your photo/avatar, there is a section called "My Claimed Blogs." In this section, you will see a box that says "Start a blog claim." In this box put your HubPages profile url. For me, that would be http://melbel.hubpages.com

The next page will ask you for details on your "blog." For my title, I just put "Melbel on HubPages" but "Melbel's Hubs" would have done just as well. I recommend making your title something along those lines (with your HubPages username, of course.)

You will be asked to enter your HubPages RSS url. You can get your HubPages url right from your HubPages profile by click the little orange button under your photo.

If you don't know of any blogs that link to you, just leave the "Linking blogs" boxes alone.

The site description may be difficult, especially if you write on a range of topics. You could put something like, "Covers a wide range of topics including, nursing, travel, and the occasional recipe!"

Under "Site categories" you will be asked to select four, and only four, categories that describe your HubPages account. Select the ones that most relate to your hubs. You can change your selections in the future, so don't worry too much here.

Fill out some tags or "keywords" to describe your hubs.

Adding your claim token to the summary of your newest hub.

How to Set Up Your Claim

Once you fill in your details, you will receive an email asking you to claim your HubPages account. This basically is their way of saying, "You say you use HubPages? Prove it!" They just want to make sure you're not claiming stuff that's not yours.

In this email, you will see a claim token made up of letters and numbers. We're going to do some fun copy and paste work with it, so go ahead and copy it.

Since Technorati, will be checking for the claim token in your RSS feed, you will want to put the claim token in your NEWEST hub. THIS WILL ONLY BE TEMPORARY. However, even though it's temporary, the claim token is still extremely ugly. I found a great way to input the claim token in the RSS feed, while making it something that's not visible to your readers.

Head on over to your newest hub and hit edit. Click "summary" and paste your Technorati claim token before anything that's written in your summary for that particular hub. After you've done that, head on over to your profile on Technorati and click "check claim" at the bottom. On the next page, you'll have to click a button that says "Activate claim token." Go ahead and do that. After that, you may receive an email from Technorati asking to confirm your email address. You'll want to go ahead and do that.

While you're waiting for your blog to be approved, go ahead and fill out the rest of your Technorati profile!

Waiting for Approval

Technorati seriously has a ton of people adding blogs to their site, so getting your claim approved can take a while. It took about a week and a half for me. Since it's best to have the claim token in your latest hub, make sure you add your claim token to the summaries of any hubs you write while you're waiting for approval.

Once approved, make sure you delete the claim token(s).

Welcome to Technorati! As a HubPages user, you have a lot of benefits on Technorati that others don't. For example, since other hubber's hubs link to YOUR hubs, you will see a much higher rank on Technorati than other bloggers.

Got a question? I'd be glad to help you out! Just leave a comment below to get the ball rolling!

Melbel, I signed up with technorati a few weeks ago but have not configured anything because it was a pain going through the website. Now, you have made every step on technorati easy peasy for me. Thanks!

Inspiring article, melbel. I had heard about Technorati but never took it any further, so your wise words have been a great encouragement to do something about it. I'm off to Technorati! Thank you.

This is great! I had never heard of this site, but now I think I'm going to sign up. Is there anything to update on the site as you publish more hubs or will it automatically update with your latest posts?

I have heard of Technorati, but have not thought of using it for HubPages. This is so helpful. Thank you!

LInda Smith 9 months ago

Takes a bit of back and forth, but with these instructions, keep this page open, technorati open and then open another hub pages for your hubs, and follow instructions, all is well. Signed up today, just on waiting list now.

Thanks for this tutorial! I am trying to increase my traffic, page views, money, etc.

I started signing up as I read your tutorial but there was some sort of glitch at the end and I'll have to go back later and do it over.

Meanwhile, I do have a question about the RSS url. I clicked on the RSS button and didn't see a URL. I 'subscribed' to my own RSS feed, then picked the top URL that showed up. Was that correct?

@DanetteWatt - Yep! Just the one up at the address bar. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be more than happy to help. :P

This is look great Melbel! I got as far as finishing off the key words and submitting for claims status. Then the page comes up saying "Because of backlog, it may take quite some time for evaluation." So here I am writing this comment, waiting for the email you say will ask me to claim my HubPages account, and suddenly it arrives in my inbox. That was a quick "quite some time", LOL! I'll go finish pasting in the token now. Thanks so much for making this site known and such helpful guidelines in how to set up our HubPages account on it!

melbel profile image

melbel Hub Author 9 months ago

Ms Dee, it's the token verification thing that takes forever. It drove me nuts I just wanted to get that token off my hub! Once it validates, make sure you take the token off your hub. You'll receive a validation email when that happens which is a great reminder to remove the token. :)

That's good to know an email comes and will jog my memory. Otherwise, I put it on my calendar for 10 days from now. Yeah, I understood you meant this latter stage is what takes so long. I just got a laugh out of the message when I first saw it for the earlier step but then the email for that step arrived right away :) Great, dlear instructions, MelBel!

My traffic isn't doing that great nor my hubber score this last week, even with adding backlinking from other sites, but I suppose I need to give it time. Thanks for all your tips!

Ms Dee profile image

Ms Dee Level 5 Commenter 9 months ago

I have verification now on that site. Are more and more of my previous hubs going to appear there, or only new ones I write from this point forward? Thanks!

melbel profile image

melbel Hub Author 9 months ago

Ms Dee, I believe it's only hubs you write from now on, but it's still a huge help (and a huge motivator as well. :P)

That said, there are several other sites that will pull your entire hub feed, for example feedagg does this.

Ms Dee profile image

Ms Dee Level 5 Commenter 9 months ago

Thanks for this clarification. That was the sense I got from their message, but wanted to be sure. Hmm, feedagg, you sure know a lot about this. Are you on feedagg?

melbel profile image

melbel Hub Author 9 months ago

Feedagg is much easier and quicker to get set up than Technorati -- AND it's another one of those "set it and forget it" methods of getting backlinks. (That's why getting backlinks using your HubPages feed is so wonderful.)

Hi melbel,

I also wanted to setup my hbu with technorati, but unfortunately it isn't working. I did search for your "melbel" hub on technorati and didn't find it.

Did it really work for you?

Kind regards

Thank you very much for so detailed isntructions on how to for technorati - thsi idea of putting this claim token in summary is simply brilliant.

LindaSmith1 profile image

LindaSmith1 7 months ago

This is confusing. Do hubbers have to go through the same process for every hub or is it one time and done.

melbel profile image

melbel Hub Author 7 months ago

You only have to do it once, but while you're waiting for the claim to go through add the claim token to each new hub you create. The tokens can be removed when the claim is complete.

LindaSmith1 7 months ago

My claim went through almost immediately

Fabulous tips. I have been on Technorati since around 2006 and actually have some older Hubs already featured on the site from when it was allowed to include individual Hubs. Do you know if I would have to delete them before following your steps and if so, how I do that? Thanks!
