6 Ways Feminism Benefits Men
82Feminism Isn't Just for Women?
Most people believe that feminism is only for women, but this couldn't be further from the truth! Feminism is for everyone. While the word "feminism" come from "feminine," it's really so much more than a movement for women. It's a human rights movement -- one that benefits every single person.
There are huge benefits to becoming a feminist, regardless of your gender. Feminism isn't just for angry white women, it's for anyone and everyone no matter what your race, no matter what your background. I cannot stress enough how important it is for everyone to understand what feminism really is.
So why should men be a part of this movement? There are lots of reasons!
It's Not About Controlling Men
One misnomer is that feminists hate men. While there may be a handful of feminists somewhere that dislike men, feminism is not about hating men. It's not about being better than men, either. It's about being equal.
There's no reason for men to be afraid of this movement. The goal isn't to make men more feminine or to make women more manly. It's about everyone reaching their own goals and dreams without gender barriers.
More Career Paths
There are a lot of stereotypes for men who have interests in careers that are traditionally "for women." For example, nursing. Male nurses can catch a lot of flack for being a guy in a "woman's job." According to this same stereotype, men are meant to be doctors, not nurses. Male nurses are somehow failures or somehow 'gay.'
See how these stereotypes can limit what a man can do? Even though many people believe that feminism is irrelevant and that women are "already there," feminism is far from over. There is still work to be done. For example, a man with an interest in making floral arrangements or who wants to be a nurse (or any other "woman's job") may choose a different career path simply to avoid constantly being called gay. This is still happening today.

Feminists Have Better Sex
True story! According to a study by Rutgers University:
- Women who perceived their male partners as feminists reported greater sexual satisfaction.
- Men with feminist partners said they had greater sexual satisfaction.
The study also found that feminist men & women reported higher quality and more stable relationships than their non-feminist counterparts. This study has thus brought on questions as to why feminism is tied with better sex and relationships. One theory is that feminist males are typically more supportive of their female partner's ambitions and goals than more traditional men.
Regardless of the cause, feminists enjoy a better relationship (in and out of the sack!)
Do What You Want
Have you ever wanted to pursue something that's traditionally done by women? Yup! A male feminist can do what they want! In fact, one male feminist writes in "Click: When We Knew We Were Feminists" that he really enjoyed sewing growing up and doing household duties. (Ya' know, women's work.)
Enjoy doing a craft? Love cooking? Feminism is helping men do these things without being called 'gay' or a pansy. If there is anything you want to pursue that is "for women," go out and do it! If you avoid the things you love because of gender barriers, those barriers only get stronger!
Make More Money
Who doesn't want more money? You may have heard a rumor that women don't get paid as much as men. Is it true? Oh heck yes! Statistics show that, in 2009, a woman made $76 for every $100 a man made.
It's a fact of life that if you've got a family and you're raising kids that you're going to need to put food on the table. If you're married and the two of you are working, that extra 25% in her wages could make a big difference!
Wouldn't it feel good to be earning more based on merit instead of whether you've got an innie or an outtie? Okay, a little bawdy, but c'mon! Men still make more than women!?

Nothing is hotter than a guy who treats women with respect! A woman isn't a complement to a man, we're not sidekicks. Don't treat me differently based on my gender. Don't pay for my dinner because "that's what men do," pay for my dinner because I make 25% less than you do! (And I'll get the tab next time!)
Hold the door if you get to it first and I'll do the same.
Don't throw your coat in a puddle so I can walk across, because I won't wash it later!
None of the feminist men I've dated tried to woo me with "look how strong and manly I am... See? I'm manly... Right?" I've dated a guy who felt his role was "to protect me." From what? It's not a turn on for me to hear that! I actually found it kind of offensive! I can't protect myself?
In my experience, a lot of the non-feminist men I've met have come across more insecure than the feminist ones. I want to date a guy who feels comfortable with their sexuality and who doesn't avoid something because "it's gay."
Personally, I only date feminist men (including men who don't even know they're feminist.) Nothing's hotter than a feminist man. I like to be with a guy who is with me because he enjoys my conversation, he enjoys my personality, because I make him laugh, etc... Seriously, it's a huge turn on.

I think our conundrum is how to we as men treat a woman as a lady and an equal at the same time. Men are advantageously taught by rules and when it comes to this dilemma there isn't a rules book. We have to learn on the job. The same goes for women. Some adhere to a conformist reality and others pick and choose which rules they will embrace. Feminism is a very undefined stance to say the very least. I can hold a door for a woman and be seen as mannersful by one and be condemned by the next. Men have the hard time of disparaging between what to do. Another needs to be said as well, some of of the mindset that men have had the hard test of life and achieved what they have without having doors held, being sat first at the table, or of the courtesies that manners dictate a man should hold for a woman. Ergo, if you want equal treatment and salaries, then get them the way I did. I was raised in the South by a Southern Lady and I can tell you I will always hold the door and sit after ladies have sat first. Its who I am and it has nothing to do with the ideology that I possess that ALL human beings should be treated equally.
Don't throw your coat in a puddle so I can walk across, because I won't wash it later! -- Cute!
Seriously, I'm with you all the way. I still can't understand the reluctance by men AND women to say they are feminists. They say, "I'm not a feminist, but...." Well, those people who came before us and who fought for our equality (such as it is at this point) weren't afraid to call themselves feminists.
I could go on but I'll get off my soapbox now! Thanks for writing this. Voted up
I'll agree with you here:
"Nothing is hotter than a guy who treats women with respect!"
Love this. It says it all. I'm constantly explaining to men that feminism frees them, too! They don't HAVE to be the breadwinner. They can stay home with the kids and let the wife bring home the bacon. They don't HAVE to pretend to like sports if they really like knitting; make me a scarf, for heaven sakes!
We have a myth of masculinity in our culture that is as pervasive as the myth of femininity. And a myth that binds a person to greater power is still a myth that BINDS.
Let's share the burden and do whatever the hell we want, regardless of whether we're "an innie or an outtie."
Too cute, by the way. :D
Great Hub Melbel. I am a supporter of feminism because it is the right thing. I wish to promote freedom and equality for all people including over 50% of our population. Everyone should be treated with respect at all times and I always conduct my life this way. That may or may not make me hotter to women but that is immaterial to me. I try to conduct my life the proper way and giving women respect and full rights and equal pay is totally in line with that. We probably would have less wars also.
Times sure have changed; although I thought what you said about the door was kind of funny. I have a brother who has to open the car door for his wife and buckle her seat belt :).
@ brandonhart100
That's terrible, lol! You should remind your brother that he doesn't *have* to do anything.
Personal preference is everything, but I would go mad having my husband buckle me into my seat like a child. :)
Yeah although I need to point out that it's her idea... whatever makes them happy I suppose...
I think being a feminist is another way to become a humanist. And I see myself as a feminist.
It is good to respect all people. Some people even respect animals.
I think this article is great. It's true that feminism isn't just a women's movement, but is a human movement. As a gay man, I love seeing a straight man who isn't afraid of being a feminist and doesn't worry about looking "macho".
Such good points- and only some of many. Men have all to gain and nothing to lose from supporting the feminist cause, as far as I'm concerned.
And yeah, feminist men are TOTALLY hot!
Great Hub, and all things that needed to be said. Just watch one episode of "Mad Men" and you'll be reminded of an era that feminism pushed us beyond (thankfully). And thank you for dispelling the prevalent myth that feminism is about emasculating men.
I like your outlook, especially the combination of facts and research. I agree so many people are confined by gender roles that they have a very hard time expressing themselves. Feminism is something that should be seen as a way for everyone to get what they want out of life.

Just voted up for this! I not only support feminism but take it further and would welcome a matriarchal system for the future. I am delighted to see Roseanne Barr, Russell Means and Guru Rasa von Werder all campaigning for matriarchy.
I've always thought that feminism was beneficial to both genders, and you've laid out why here. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Melbel...
You actually had me at "Feminist have better sex." In fact...that could have been the title.
I am proud to say that as a man...I have been on the feminist bandwagon for years...because it is what is right!
Great article!

Great thought provoking hub Melbel. Men do benefit from feminism in many ways. I am surprised at the male response to feminism in the last 50 years. Not only are males supportive, they really don't try to supress it or abolish it. This would not have happened in man's early history. Well done, interesting, and well researched!
Loved it Melbel! So funny and true! I don't think my husband would consider himself a feminist but I do:). He's tolerant of everyone and everything - very open - very thoughtful. On January 31 it will be the 19th anniversary of our first date!!
He doesn't buy me flowers - if I want them I buy my own with his credit card:) he does buy me music! And last week surprised me with a brand new decked out computer AND desk! I didn't even ask :-). These kind of guys do exist - and they are keepers - for life:)
Up and outta sight:)
Very good piece - and the data is so interesting. I agree - men do benefit from getting in touch with their 'inner woman.' (Hope that idea doesn't freak them out!). Voted up and interesting.

This was an extremely interesting article. I'm with you all the way. I see no reason why a woman can't do anything a man can do, and vice-versa. Gender placement in the workplace is a horrible things for both sexes. Voted up!
